James S. (Sonny) Battle, 78, of Pottstown, PA, passed away Tuesday, July 6, 2010 at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia, PA, after a lengthy battle with respiratory illness.

His wife of 42 years, Geraldine E. Battle (Leisure), preceded him in death on January 20, 2010.

James was born in Reading, PA on March 4, 1932. He was the son of the late Wesley C. and Matilda (Roberts) Battle. Sonny was a graduate of Downingtown Industrial School. Later he served in the U.S. Army in 1955, and he was discharged honorably in 1957. James was a 60 year resident of Pottstown, PA, and was the owner of the Pottstown Bowler's Club, and managed the Hotel James for over 30 years. James was also an employee of the Pottstown School District.

James was a superb bowler, and in 2004 he was a recipient of a Bowler's 800 series ring. James was a lifetime member of the Carver Legion Post #159. He was also a former member of the Berks Lodge #47 of IPOE and Victor Lodge #74 Masonic order.

James was preceded in death by his two daughters, infant Sarah Elizabeth in 1970, and Faith McClary in 2006. James was also preceded in death by three sisters, Doris McClain, Evelyn Harris, and Bessie Battle-Rawlins. He is survived by three grandchildren, Tanishia Norris, Shawna Norris and Darris McClary, all of Reading. Also surviving are two sisters Alice B. Smith and Sarah Battle of Tucson, AZ, and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
