Walter Joseph Jones, Sr., 80, of West Chester, PA, husband of Bertha Reason Jones, passed on Friday, March 5, 2010 at Pocopson Homes.
Born in Oxford, PA, May 15, 1929, he was the son of the late Walter John Jones and Gladys Grant Jones Hopkins.
He attended schools in the West Chester Area School District graduating from West Chester High School, class of 1947. While in high school, he was outstanding in track. Following high school, he went into the U.S. Army. While serving in the Army, he was the recipient of the Good Conduct and National Service Defense Medals. After the service, he worked for the Brandywine Mushroom Cannery and later he worked for Luken's Steel Company as a Tyson operator and grinder for 35 years until he retired in 1987.
As a young boy, he attended Allen AME in Oxford and later he attended Bethel AME in West Chester. As an adult, he joined Rice's Temple A.U.M.P. under the leadership of the late Rev. Alonzo D. Cole.
He was a member of Harmony Lodge #21 PHA Masonic where he was a Past Master. He was in Red House and Past Scribe Member Consistory #174 of Chester where he was a 32nd Degree Mason, member of the V.F.W., the Star Social Club of West Chester, PA and the Captain Levi M. Hood Elks I.B.P.O.E. of West Chester.
Mr. Jones collected Hess trucks, stamps and coins, beanie babies and Eagles paraphernalia. Watching the Eagles and the Penn Relays was his favorite pastime.
Surviving besides his wife, are one son, Walter J. Jones (wife Laura) of Media, PA; one daughter, Gladys D. Jones of West Chester, PA; two grandchildren; two sisters, Geraldine Jackson of Coatesville, PA, Mary Baylis of Paoli, Pa; three brothers, Paul Jones of Philadelphia, PA, Carl "Bunny" Jones of West Chester, PA, Teddy Johnson of Coatesville, PA and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
